Joined Salomon Brothers in 1987 and Goldman Sachs in 1990. Became a partner at Goldman
Sachs in 1994 at the age of 30. At Goldman Sachs, he worked across virtually every layer of
the capital structure—from government bonds, derivatives, structured products and
securitization to distressed debt and special situations investing—and in the latter part
of his career founded the Special Situations Group.
Founded Monex in 1999 in partnership with Sony, and established Monex Group in 2004, which
is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The group operates online brokerage and asset management businesses in Japan and the United
States, together with Web3-related services. It also helps drive the development of
engagement-focused investing in Japan through Japan Catalyst, an investment advisory firm,
and the Japan Catalyst Fund. The group owns Coincheck Group, a Nasdaq-listed subsidiary,
further strengthening its presence in the digital asset sector.
Served as an outside director of the Tokyo Stock Exchange for five years and has been
actively involved in initiatives to reform and strengthen Japan’s capital markets. He also
serves as an independent director of Mastercard and is a former Vice Chair of Human Rights
Watch.
In 2023, he founded the University of Tokyo Center for Applied Capital Market Research
(UTCMR) and the Ruby Foundation.

1987年にソロモン・ブラザーズに入社、1990年にゴールドマン・サックスに入社。1994年、30歳で同
社パートナーに就任。ゴールドマン・サックスでは、国債、デリバティブ、ストラクチャード商品、
証券化商品から不良債権投資やスペシャル・シチュエーション投資に至るまで、資本構成のほぼあら
ゆる階層にわたる投資・取引業務に従事し、キャリア後半にはスペシャル・シチュエーションズ・グ
ループを創設した。
1999年にソニー株式会社との共同出資によりマネックスを創業し、2004年に東京証券取引所上場の持
株会社であるマネックスグループ株式会社を設立。
同グループは、日本および米国においてオンライン証券事業と資産運用事業を展開するとともに
、Web3関連事業も手掛けている。また、投資助言会社であるJapan CatalystおよびJapan Catalyst
Fundを通じ、日本におけるエンゲージメント投資の発展を牽引している。さらに、NASDAQ上場子会社
であるコインチェックグループを擁し、デジタルアセット分野におけるプレゼンスを強化している。
東京証券取引所の社外取締役を5年間務めるなど、日本の資本市場の改革・発展に積極的に取り組んで
きた。現在は、Mastercardの社外取締役を務めるほか、Human Rights Watchの元副議長でもある。
2023年には、東京大学応用資本市場研究センター（UTCMR）およびルビ財団を設立した。
