Sohn Conference Hong Kong presented by the Karen Leung Foundation raises more than HK$2,000,000 in battle against cancer
– Prominent Asia hedge fund managers Amit Rajpal, Carl Huttenlocher, Eashwar Krishnan, Morgan Sze, Seth Fischer and others shared investment ideas
– Monies raised to fund end of life care for six to eight patients with late-stage gynecological cancer each year at the Sister Annie Skau Holistic Care Centre, and support a Hong Kong wide HPV vaccination program
June 18, 2014 (Hong Kong), The Sohn Conference Foundation and the Karen Leung Foundation held their first joint conference in Hong Kong on June 12, 2014, with more than 300 guests attending, a nearly threefold increase in the number of attendees at last year’s inaugural Karen Leung Memorial Investor Conference. The Sohn Conference Hong Kong presented by the Karen Leung Foundation saw sell and buy side investment professionals, asset allocators, and other professional investors from across Asia turn out to hear investment insights, ideas, and opinions presented by some of the region’s most renowned managers.
The speakers discussed a variety of micro and macro topics, including the Chinese Yuan, Japanese consumer finance, and Indian automotive stocks. Some of the ideas presented included:
― Carl Huttenlocher of Myriad Asset Management gave his views on what he foresees as further weakening in the Chinese Yuan.
― Eashwar Krishnan of Tybourne Capital outlined reasons why he believes that Banco de Oro and Bank of the Philippine Islands may be interesting investments.
― Morgan Sze of Azentus Capital and Seth Fischer of Oasis spoke about the opportunities that they view to exist in India’s automotive industry, specifically at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Tata Motors, respectively.
In addition, Dr. Antony Leung of the Haven of Hope's Sister Annie Skau Holistic Care Centre in Hong Kong provided a moving overview of how his team supports hospice patients in their final days, and renowned Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynecology Dr. Lucy Lord discussed issues around cervical screening and HPV rates in Hong Kong and her views on what can be done to raise awareness and advocate for women's health.
The conference was hugely successful with more than HK$2,000,000 raised. All proceeds will go to support the missions of both the Karen Leung Foundation and The Sohn Conference Foundation. In Hong Kong, funds raised will go toward providing a Karen Leung Foundation Bed at the Sister Annie Skau Holistic Care Centre for patients with late stage gynecological cancer, an HPV vaccination program aimed at increasing the uptake of the vaccine by partnering with local schools, physicians, and community-based organizations to reach age-appropriate girls and young women, and other initiatives of the Karen Leung Foundation.
The Karen Leung Foundation and The Sohn Conference Foundation wish to thank all those who attended and supported the 2014 Hong Kong conference, including the following corporate sponsors and event partners: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, East Rock Capital, REORIENT, Saga Tree Capital Advisors, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Maples and Calder, Segantii, Sidley Austin, EY, Oasis, RLM Finsbury, Linklaters, Schulte Roth & Zabel, Five Blocks, Marshall Wace, Valiant Capital, Tybourne Capital, Myriad Asset Management, D.E. About the Karen Leung Foundation:
The Karen Leung Foundation (“KLF”) is a non-profit charitable organization in Hong Kong (Registered Charity No. 91/13069) created by Karen’s family and colleagues to honour her life and fulfil her hopes for a better future for women, free from gynaecological cancer.
Karen was 34 years old, newly engaged to be married, and had a promising career as an equity and derivatives trader at Oasis Hong Kong, when she was diagnosed with metastatic cervical cancer in November 2011 after experiencing symptoms of back pain and fatigue. She fought courageously for nearly a year before passing away in October 2012, at 35 years old. In the days before she died, Karen expressed her wish to raise awareness among Hong Kong women and girls about gynaecological cancer to ensure that others have the information and resources to prevent cancer and access to the best medical care, if needed.
Karen Leung Foundation’s mission is to save lives by reducing the impact of gynaecological cancer. The Karen Leung Foundation works to raise awareness about gynaecological cancers, educate the local community to promote prevention and early detection, and ensure that women in treatment have access to optimal medical care. To achieve our objectives, the Karen Leung Foundation will collaborate with the local and international medical community, as well as other NGO’s committed to improving women’s health.
