Board Member (Voluntary)

About the Position

The Karen Leung Foundation (KLF) www.karenleungfoundation.org is working to save lives in Hong Kong by raising awareness of gynaecological cancer, educating women to increase rates of early detection and ensuring that women in treatment have access to optimal medical care. Founded in 2013 to honour Karen Leung, a hedge fund trader who died at age 35 following a diagnosis of metastatic cervical cancer, we are the first and only organisation in Hong Kong solely devoted to women's gynaecological cancers. To date, the Karen Leung Foundation has raised more than HK$28 Million to fight gynaecological cancer to help Hong Kong girls and women.

The Karen Leung Foundation is seeking impactful and communicative Board Members to serve on its volunteer Board of Directors. We are looking for people with background, skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Strategic planning in brand development and positioning
  • Medical expertise and advisory
  • Finance, accounting and budgeting
  • Networking and stakeholder engagement with existing connections to Hong Kong’s UHNWI and family offices

Job Requirements and Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advance KLF’s mission - contribute to the long-term development and sustainability of The Karen Leung Foundation and its programs
  • Accountability - ensure The Karen Leung Foundation meets its legal and governance obligations
  • Representation - advocate for The Karen Leung Foundation to current and potential partners and donors
  • Resourcing - secure financial support and pro-bono/in-kind products and services to benefit The Karen Leung Foundation
  • Organizational Assessment – assess the effectiveness of the programs and evaluate the performance and compensation of the Executive Director
  • Serve on the committee as operationally required


CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for KLFs mission
  • A commitment to and understanding of KLFs beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, health, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
  • Strong diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • A strong existing network that can help drive opportunities and outcomes for KLF
  • Previous governance experience and/or relevant governance qualifications
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of KLF programs

 

COMMITMENT

The Karen Leung Foundation Board members are eligible for re-appointment. Service on the board is of a voluntary nature. Board members are currently required to:

  • Attend approximately four to six (4 -6) board meetings every year of approximately 60-90 minutes duration. Each Board Member is required to review the materials shared ahead of meetings. One of those meetings represents the AGM
  • Attend sector-specific working group meetings, cross-sector meetings, or monthly conference calls for management/financial reporting and general compliance issues
  • Contribute in addition to board meetings to network, promote and explore opportunities for the organization
  • Undertake special projects and assignments in conjunction with other Board members to assist in progressing the organisation’s purpose and mission
  • Board members residing in Hong Kong must attend a minimum of one KLF function annually
