The “Absolute Return” Beyond Finance as the Pathway to Women Empowerment and Transformative Impact
The 2025 Sohn Hong Kong Women in Finance Breakfast began with a dynamic fireside chat with Louisa Wong, Executive Chairperson of Global Sage and bestselling author of Women Who Chase Butterflies. From a stable corporate career to launching a venture that redefines success in finance and philanthropy, Louisa introduced the concept of “absolute return” that goes beyond finance and reflects one’s drive for growth and positive impact in life and legacy-driven leadership.
“Embracing the ‘can-do’ spirit allows women to take bold steps in their careers, thriving in uncertainty while guiding our teams, we are in it together” said Louisa Wong, “Ultimately, our legacy is measured by how we create a ripple effect of positive change.”
“At Karen Leung Foundation, we believe success goes beyond professional achievements – it’s about taking proactive steps towards a healthier and more balanced life,” said Katharina Reimer, Executive Director at KLF, “Louisa’s journey inspires us to drive transformative impact through mentorship, innovations, and a steadfast commitment to empowering women across all facets of society.”
Navigating Market Volatility with Top Investment Picks Poised for Growth
The 2025 Sohn Hong Kong Investment Leaders Conference took centre stage in the afternoon, where Asia’s leading as well as emerging hedge funds and asset managers unveiled high-growth investment opportunities and explored trends that shape the Asia-Pacific Markets, with sectors such as female healthcare, online commerce, and automotive underscoring the region’s robust growth potentials. Key highlights included:
• Aalap Mahadevia, Founder and CIO at Briarwood Chase Management, shared his positive outlook on SunTech Realty (512179), a Mumbai-based real estate developer. He noted that the company high-quality business model, underpinned by strong brand trust, enables premium pricing and positions it for sustained success in India’s dynamic real estate market.
• Damon Meng, CEO and CIO at Frontline Global Management, highlighted the significant growth potential of Indra Sistemas (ES0118594417), a Spanish company delivering proprietary solutions in the Transport, Air Traffic, and Defence markets. He emphasised the company’s strong backing from the Spanish government as a designated national champion, coupled with its robust multi-year visibility through existing contracts for sustained success and market leadership.
• Jon Jhun, Managing Director at MY.Alpha Management, emphasised the significant growth potential of Hyundai Engineering & Construction (000720.KS) in South Korea’s thriving nuclear development sector. He underscored the company’s dominant market position and proven expertise in nuclear project execution, bolstered by its expanding international presence.
• Masaki Gotoh, CEO and CIO at TriVista Capital, saw the upside potential for Santen Pharmaceutical (4536 JT), a leading Japanese pharmaceutical firm. He emphasised the company’s pioneering PMPA-approved drug for paediatric myopia, capitalising on rising global demand for specialised eye care solutions.
• Seth Fischer, Founder and CIO at Oasis Management, explored the growth potential of Round One Corporation (4680 JT), a Japanese multi-entertainment facility company expanding in the US market. He highlighted the company’s unique ability to export Japanese culture, which remains unaffected by tariffs.
• Thea Jamison, Founder and Managing Director at CHANGE Global, underscored the robust growth prospects for Gedeon Richter (HU0000123096), a pharmaceutical leader specialising in women’s healthcare and neuropsychiatry innovation. She highlighted the company’s strong position to capitalise on the expanding global market for women’s healthcare, driven by its innovative pipeline and strategic focus on high-demand therapeutic areas.
During the debate session, David Dredge, CIO at Convex Strategies, and Nick Ferres, Group CIO at Vantage Point Asset Management, discussed their investment philosophies, emphasising the importance of managing extreme market events over average returns. David highlighted the significant impact of the best and worst months on long-term S&P 500 performance, advocating for robust risk mitigation to enable aggressive investing. Nick focused on seeking attractive risk compensation, noting poor valuations in the S&P 500 and better opportunities in markets like Vietnam, where his portfolio targets equities with low valuations and high growth potential.
Diving deeper into the asset allocator perspective, Dawn Yu, Managing Director and Head of Research at Persistent Asset Partners, brought a sharp, data-driven lens to how capital is being allocated amid market shifts. Dawn mentioned that “The red flags when we select managers include excessive risk-taking or AUM growth beyond the strategy’s capacity. Both new and established managers must find a niche, deliver consistent returns, and follow up diligently. Exceptional managers are rare, and we seek long-term partnerships with them.”
This year particularly, the conference launched its inaugural ‘Big Pitch’ competition, offering ambitious young talents a platform to present innovative investment ideas to a panel of global experts. Both finalist teams from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) took the stage and showcased promising investment ideas, with Pane Prospectors, From the UST MBA programme presenting Fuyao Glass and Team Horizon delivering well-researched pitches on Googles Chat bod potential. As part of KLF’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of financial talents, both teams have received vouchers for the Henley Hedge Fund Executive Program and the Hedge Fund Program Starter Course, kindly donated by Inflection Point Intelligence.
“Over the past 13 years, the Sohn Hong Kong Investment Leaders Conference has been a vital force in raising funds and awareness for women’s health and empowerment initiatives across Asia,” Katharina added, “We are grateful for the unwavering support from this community of leading investors. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to our premier sponsors, Third Bridge and Marex, as well as to our moderator, Annabelle Droulers from Bloomberg Television Asia, Akin, East Rock Capital, and Oasis Management for their generous contributions, which has been instrumental in driving meaningful progress towards a future where all women thrive.”
