The Karen Leung Foundation’s mission is to save lives by reducing the impact of gynaecological cancers in Hong Kong.
What We Do
…and how it all started
The Karen Leung Foundation (“KLF” or the “Foundation”) makes an impact by raising awareness about gynaecological cancers, educating the local community to promote prevention and early detection, and ensuring that women in treatment have access to optimal care. To achieve our objectives, KLF collaborates with the local and international medical community, as well as other NGO’s committed to improving women’s health.
The Foundation was founded in 2013 with a vision to save lives by reducing the impact of gynaecological cancer. After conducting an initial in-depth community assessment, we’re working daily to address the unmet needs of the Hong Kong community. In 2014, we launched our initial programs and services aimed at increasing awareness of gynaecological cancer, promoting prevention of cervical cancer and supporting women in treatment.
Awareness
At KLF, we strive to reduce the incidence and mortality rates of gynaecological cancers by raising awareness around the disease and empowering women and men alike, to consciously play an active role in their health
MorePrevention
Cervical cancer is highly preventable through vaccinations and screening. KLF aims to educate young girls and women on the importance of preventative measures and providing access to precautionary programmes, as well as lobby for more government participation and public programmes.
MoreCare & Support
Cancer affects not just the patients. KLF aims to address the needs of gynaecological cancer patients and their families through partnerships and support programmes, which focus on overall wellbeing and the survivorship experience through holistic rehabilitation services.
MoreOur Story
Karen Leung
In November 2011, Karen Leung was just 34-years old, newly engaged to be married, with a promising career as a trader, when she was diagnosed with metastatic cervical cancer. After experiencing months of vague symptoms such as back pain and fatigue, the diagnosis was shocking. Karen sought treatment in Hong Kong and the United States. After fighting courageously she passed away in October 2012, at age 35.
Before she died, Karen expressed her wish to raise awareness among Hong Kong women and girls about gynaecological cancers, so that others have the information needed to prevent cancer, detect it earlier, and gain access to the best treatment options available. The Karen Leung Foundation (梁愷昍婦癌基金會) was created to honour Karen’s memory and her wish to save lives by reducing the impact of gynaecological cancers in Hong Kong.
